Co-sleeping- You've got to try it!
I was in the 8th month of my pregnancy and I was looking through the baby cribs
online. I shortlisted a few, I wanted to be ready with everything before the
baby arrives. I know in India it is considered inauspicious to buy baby stuff
before the baby is born and buying a crib is anyways considered a waste of
money. In fact for the initial 1 month the baby is made to wear old clothes (obviously
cleaned and dried properly). My mother in fact resisted the fact that I was buying
a crib for the
baby and wanted me to sleep in the same bed
as the baby. I thought it was for the same reason so the argument went on
for a couple of days. Finally she asked me to hold on the purchase for at least
1 month after the delivery. To me this was the compromise that I could agree to.
As I anyways planned to make the baby sleep in the crib. I did not want any
dependency on me for the baby to sleep and also thought this sleeping
arrangement would be more comfortable for the three of us.
After the delivery 2 months went by very quickly. I almost forgot about the
crib. In those 2 months, my perspective changed and I realized why my mom was
insisting on co-sleeping in the same bed(perhaps she did not communicate it clearly) and was against me buying the crib.
Co-sleeping especially in the same bed (baby sleeping the crib attached to your bed is also co-sleeping)
has its own benefits-
1. It makes feeding easier with time, as you can feed the baby while sleeping, dream-feed them without actually getting up and disturbing both your and the baby's sleep.
2. It is a good way to spend some quality time with your baby. When the baby wakes up in the morning or when you are putting to sleep.
3. It eliminates the stress and effort of getting up at night to check upon the baby while he is sleeping. It keeps the separation anxiety in check.
4. Both you and the baby will sleep longer if co-sleeping. It is tried and tested.
5. As I mentioned in my previous articles that the more you bond with the baby the more your milk producing hormones stay alive.

Most important for me is I love to see my baby sleep, love it
when she wakes up looks at me and smiles and I love to snuggle with her, it is
the best thing to do in the whole world. Although I did buy the crib at a later
stage (when the baby started rolling) in order to have a safer option for the
baby to sleep alone during the day. But we still sleep together at night and I love
every bit of it.
